Pendt Harland has spent her entire life on a space ship, being told she is worthless and unwanted. During a space station layover, Pendt decides to escape by sneaking off the ship and hiding in Brannick Station. She is discovered by the Brannick twins, and they decide to hatch a plan to escape their pre-determined destinies, that is beneficial to them all.
I honestly don't know how to feel about this book... I think the premise could have been really cool, but the overall execution was a bit of a let down. The genes-mage aspect was pretty cool, and I was definitely intrigued with that but there were a lot of plot points that made me really uncomfortable and I was not a fan of. There is a giant info-dump at the beginning, and then it is mostly just a lot of the main character telling us events that are happening. The book is an extremely fast read though, and I finished it in two sittings. But I wouldn't say it was a necessarily good book.

I was very excited about this one as I had enjoyed E. K. Johnson’s other works such as Exit, Pursued by a Bear and this seemed like it would be exactly my thing. Unfortunately the worldbuilding was all over the place, ill defined, extremely arbitrary and just makes no sense? And the worldbuilding is what the plot and characters absolutely hinge upon.

“Not knowing was a weakness, and no weakness could be tolerated in space.”
Pendt has lived on the Harland since she was born. It's all she's ever known. Her family treats her poorly because she is different than them. She can't do the things they do and is considered a waste of space and precious food. Food, it comes in cube form and is measured to the exact amount each person may need to do the bare minimum on the ship. Once Pendt turns 18 she will be contracted out by her family and that's coming very soon.
The first thing you see when you pick up this book is a trigger warning for human trafficking and food deprivation. It gets intense in this book even for how short it is. In the beginning I wasn't sure how this book was going to go for me. I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, and I hardly reach for it. The first chapter is a bit confusing mainly because it doesn't add anything to the story. If I were to go back and read that part again it would probably make more sense. Once we meet our main character it gets much more interesting. Once you get closer to the middle of the book things begin to be even more interesting and you get to see Pendt flourish and develop.
While this book is by no means perfect, it was still interesting enough for me to end up loving it. There is Trans rep in this book. The best part is that a main character is given that identity and flourishes. While on page it's very subtle, but many will begin to notice and love that character even more ^^
Overall, I really loved this one so it will be sticking around on my shelves in the hopes that I will again re-read it. Happy reading dear friends!

This book had an interesting premise. In terms of timing I feel like there was a lot of time spent on the Harland and then everything else happened too quickly and easily. I realize she was in a bad/tricky situation when she left the Harland but she agreed far too readily and then it all happened in a second wrapped up in a bow the end. I also realize it's the future but they are 18 and are acting like adults who have their shit together and know things and at this point in time that is not realistic to my brain.
fast-paced
It wraps up OK, leaving room for more, and then it sets the hook for the next installment in the epilogue.
Discusses externally-imposed food restrictions to near-starvation levels and forced pregnancy.

Graphic: Eating disorder, Emotional abuse, Medical trauma
Moderate: Trafficking, Pregnancy, Colonisation
Pretty great short read. At times I wish the author expanded the conflict to have more fruitful results. Sometimes the story reads like a slice of life, but be aware of the trigger and content warnings! The audiobook productions helped with the immersion since there are sound effects like doors opening, static etc.
Solid 3 ⭐️ (stars)
I very much enjoyed the read but the ending was rushed so fast it didn’t even make sense. Which is sad, because this book had a lot of potential. More world building was required and it lacked character development tho.
It’s still a solid read and it was a super easy and fast read for me. But honestly the way the ending was rushed was completely disappointing. Especially for lovers of Sci-Fi.
