The book's premise was excellent but in reality, the book felt just a compilation of unnecessarily detailed personal histories and the characters didnt seem to interact at all. Everything was told to the reader straight away and nothing was left to be found out, as we just got like 4 pages of everyones personal histories delivered to us instead of the main character finding out anything new. the plot was predictable and a bit of a dissapointment, because i had high hopes for this book.

Rock solid book with great characters and mood and a very cool setting. BUT, at page 250 there was a sudden useful-for-the-author denial of information that our protagonist learned. That was maddening. A chapter ended right on that deceit and turn but again and again it was referred to without cluing us in. For me that broke the entire enterprise apart. I couldn't believe it. The remainder of the book was great but...

Book just wasn't for me. Maybe because I listened to the audiobook. The characters jump around too much. While the darkness and winter is depicted well, it's just so slow. I'll try his other book series next.

Darkness and snow… Darkness and snow…

I cannot pinpoint the reason for my 5 star rating for this book. Was it the atmosphere? Was it the imagery described so beautifully? Was it the writing style? The characters? The mystery?
Was it all the above?
All I know is that when I picked up the book it was mid-morning and by night time I had read more than half of it.

“Nothing ever happens here.”
That is what Ari Thór is told upon arriving to Siglufjörður, a small, peaceful village in Northern Iceland to begin his new job as a policeman.
Nothing ever happens in remote villages buried in snow.
Or so we think…
Because secrets have the habit of coming to the surface in small towns.

This is my first book in the “Dark Iceland” series, I gave it 3 stars but I will try another book to see how the characters are developed. I did not figure out who did it until almost the end, but I think this was more because the author talked very little about this character during the book.
