SHE DID NOTHING WRONG
One the things that draws me to horror, and almost exclusively to horror by BIPOC authors, is that horror can tell the truth in a way that "just" the truth can't. The author succeeds in this book to capture the way in which microsggressions (macro aggressions) in an unfair system cause spite that ferments into resentment and then burning rage. While the main character isn't "nice," she's sympathetic and I wanted to root for her, especially because her "best" friend is sadly reminiscent of far too many self-described allies who seem like friends but prove eventually not to be.

AAAAAAAH!!
I love that this book honors the MC's rage and lets her be angry at the world and all the injustice she faces.
This was delightfully bloody and Gothic and creepy - a truly sumptuous ballet horror that will enthrall readers whether they're knowledgeable about dance or not.
Andor has my whole heart and reminds me a little of Dorian Gray, if Dorian was a feral woodland beastie.
Truly loved everything about this book and can't wait to read the sequel.

Hauntingly, brutally beautiful!!
Phenomenal…this story of rage and redemption was so well done!! The characters were all finely written, and the behind-the-scenes glimpses into the world of ballet rang true. For a sport so hidden in softness and femininity, it’s brutal, cutthroat and not for the faint of heart. I’m actually shocked I haven’t read a horror treatment about it before!! The author also did an excellent job at exploring the intersection of class and race within the sport, and the ways that constantly feeling left out (whether by ignorance or by overt design) could drive one to seek more power and control. Laurence is an engaging and empathetic lead, and as she draws closer to making decisions that on the surface, she should rebuke, as a reader you also WANT to see her make those choices and finally get the recognition she deserves.
I can’t wait to have another adventure with Laurence and her gang!!
