the premise of the book is so cool and i was so excited to get into reading. it starts off fine, and even now i think it's a good story (even if not the most original), but the execution is just killing me.
several points. at first i thought i was just slow and maybe dumb but i realized as i read on that the writing is just genuinely confusing, as in, bad explanations of what's going on. doesn't help that on top of that we get some really weird time skips? girlie finds a dead body... and suddenly it's a week later?! i just feel like all the important stuff was skipped over and instead we got long descriptions of dances that we didn't really need.. and then, lastly, the style of writing just... felt so over the top which made the characters feel so flat. miss main is constantly telling us how she's evil etc. etc. ... but i feel like we never really get to understand her. it's just her telling us stuff. in language that feels pretentious and repetitive and which doesn't help with the confusion of the bad explanations..... 😭 anyway!
i did like the story. i love the core idea of not just embracing the monster in yourself but actively choosing it as like a coming of age thing. i just wish this would have been done in a much nicer way sigh

99% of the book was great. I love rage and morally gray MC’s but I was blindsided by the ending because it felt out of character for the MC.

I own this physically but switched to the audiobook after just the first chapter. I thought the narrator did an incredible job, but ultimately I just didn’t vibe with the story. I probably could have DNF’d.

This gave me Suspiria vibes except with more gore and murder. Shea was able to write a character (Laure) that I so badly wanted to succeed, but was horrified by the decisions that happened at every turn. If you care for ballet, devilish pacts, and POCs as a main character in horror, then you will not be able to put this book down. If madness could be a character, Shea brought it to life.
