witchofthemountains's review against another edition

There is certainly an audience for this book. I, unfortunately, am not part of it. Skye has selected deities from multiple pantheons, some I do not feel comfortable working with for many reasons, and given a brief overview of their roles in their pantheons as well as chants and so forth that the reader can use to call on the aspects of these goddesses.

I admit that I skipped straight to the section on one of my goddesses, Freyja. I was disturbed by the broad strokes Skye painted her with, which effectively erased whole portions of the goddess' personality, mythos, and abilities. She was painted as little more than an orgasm-hungry shadow of the more complex truth that the myths present her as.

Given Skye's reduction of Freyja, I am unwilling to use her texts in my practice. I understand that there are people out there for whom this book would be useful, but I would not recommend it to anyone who is seeking to honor a goddess by invoking Her essence through anything found in this book. I can only imagine at best you'd get a token boost and at worse you would offend the goddess in question.

Instead of this book, I'd recommend reading the myths concerning your preferred goddess and creating your own chants.
