Solid 4 to 4.5 until the last page, then this book and author went off. So good.

This book probably deserves one more star because the last half is pretty exceptional but the beginning is so slow that I had to average it all out. I love how the concise prose intersects with all of the anger. And you can't help but be pissed at how this family was torn apart by the internment camps and racism. I definitely recommend it.

I'm not a fan of Julie Otsuka's writing. I find it really self -conscious without saying much. This is the second book of hers I haven't enjoyed. Even though both of her books I read were short they still felt too long. I would have liked to spend more time in the dad's perspective in this book but it was the shortest chapter.

It was great. I need to read more of her work.
