Rafe MacKade leaves his beloved hometown after the death of his mother. Feeling isolated and lost like the haunted Barlow place that sits abandoned after the war of Antietam, he decides his place is not in Maryland. After ten years, he returns home to his brothers and buys the Barlow place. As he starts to fix it up, he hears the ghosts of the house and knows that it needs people. The history of the Barlows and the MacKades goes back to the murder and death of soldiers who line the property. I was intrigued by the historical aspect of the story. Rafe meets Regan, a woman who opened an antique store a few years ago. Rafe hires her to help return the Barlow place to its original state and her antiques are required. As much as she doesn't want to fall for the ladies man Rafe, she seems to fail every time he's around. A fast and delightful read and I loved the intertwining storylines of the MacKade brothers and what is to come in the next few books.

Definitely one of her earlier series...

I can tell it's an older series as the style is different from the recent ones. There's also a ton of quasi-offensive stereotypes applied to background characters that made it hard to really enjoy the plot. Hopefully the other books redeem the series, but as of now, the McKade brothers are my least favorite heroes.

twas fine

Wanted a quick and easy to read romance and this fit the bill. I found the violence in Rafe hard to get to grips with alongside a domestic violence story but it was readable.

I sadly DNF'd this book. It just got a bit too hokey for me. Maybe the romance moved too fast, or Rafe's pick up lines were too corny. I don't know.

I gave it three stars because even though I didn't finish it, I can still recognize good writing.

But who knows, I might try it again one day.

DNF at 20% No rating b/c it's just not my style, I doubt there's anything really horribly wrong with it. Probably.

Because I believe in swift decisions. And there was a paranormal element that I have low tolerance for.

And also, the hero's eyes are green. The heroine is super hot. The hero's hair is black. the heroine's eyes are blue. They are both super hot.

Nora Roberts and I just don't gel.

A nice, quick read.

truly the one and only nora roberts can make me read romance novels from the early 90s... and yes i did read the other three books in this series because why not devote multiple days of my life to reading about the antics of some dumb stoic alpha male brothers and the women they are so so so weak for
