A stellar ending to the three book series! I love how imaginative Sarah Lark is with her characters, they go on such adventures and experience so many things across the varying cultures of New Zealand, Australia, and even South Africa. I love the historical research that goes into a Sarah Lark book and I'm so thankful that have been translated into English and are even available as audiobooks. I can't wait to start on another Sarah Lark series of books. I wish I could give this series more than five stars!
2019 review:
Extremely disappointing.
First of all the stakes were too low. Usually Sarah Lark's books are about women going through terrible things, but still persevering. It can come close to misery porn, so it's not that I would be totally against a lighter book, but there was just nothing at stake here. The characters went through bad marriages and that was it?
Secondly, the characters were annoying. Enough said about that, because I never want to think about Kevin Drury ever again.
Lastly, there weren't even any good romances! There are always good romances in Sarah Lark books. [I mean who am I supposed to root for here? Doortje and Kevin? Doortje is a slave owner and Kevin is a serial cheater. Patrick and Nandi? I mean I liked them, but they had close to no scenes together. Roberta and Vincent? Roberta was in love with Kevin for the entire book and only settled for Vincent, there was no passion there. At least Rosie and Tom were cute? But they also had like three scenes together. I'm not going to lie and say this has been my favourite series of 2020 because it just hasn't BUT this was a good series to read and I've learnt quite a bit.
Why 3 Stars?
✿ The lack of racism. This book especially really highlighted something that was missing quite a bit in the previous books. There is some racism but it was very easy for the characters to accept non white characters into their lives and maybe produce children with them I just can't really believe this is accurate? The most accurate racism I felt was with the slaves in south Africa, but even then it wasn't completely right. I get its not nice to read but we all know it would have been happening in the time period its set so I'd have thought it was more accurate to show it? It could have been a real learning experience for some.
✿ This book itself just didn't teach me anything really. I learnt about this war in south Africa something I'd not known about but nothing really of interest I thought. This book really ended up feeling quite gossipy and catty instead of at least insightful and enlightening. The second book was similar but at least we got to see part of women's rights being shown even if that didn't materialise until the last 30% of the book.
✿ Some of the characters are just plain awful. Lizzie I really despise, shes just awful. Her wholly than earth attitude, her resentment for Kathleen when Michael was still in love with her and I still feel they should have ended up together but then Michael is garbage too. Having to refer to Michael as someone she has to watch out for. That is a grown man?! That just got me going when that was said.
I'm glad I've read this book, I feel like each book did give me more information that I hadn't expected it to. I didn't know New Zealand was the first for women's rights that was very interesting to know. This book however just felt a little flat. Almost like this book wasn't planned before she started the trilogy.

It took me a while to get around to reading this, which means my retention of the previous novels is not so good... But even so, I loved to see where the families have grown and landed and like always, Sarah Lark draws me in and takes me for a delightful ride!
