As I have previously mentioned, YA is not really my genre. That being said, this book was pretty entertaining.

I really appreciated that there wasn't a ton of romance, there were more important things at stake. I feel like it was heavily inspired by Egyptians and I don't know if you've played Fable, but it reminded me of the city of Aurora. So the premise was really cool with a conquering tyrant who has an entire city of slaves and some sort of magical backing.

It got to be a little too much for me by the end of it with the whole soft magic system and things aligning themselves too easily, plus some cheesy dialogue, but overall it was a nice ride.

Something that really bugged me (even though it's minor): I don't understand the constant use of "bigger girl" when describing Nerea. I understand if she was in a fight with a smaller girl and you have to differentiate the two, but to constantly refer to her like that in any possible situation (even if she is dealing with men or just being by herself) just irked me. Just say "girl", we get it, she is bigger than a delicate little flower (to use the prince's words).

Anyway, if you love YA and a mythical desert sort of feeling with a lot of gods that can wreak havoc or help the hero, this book might be perfect for you. 3.5 stars
