What a ride! I've never read anything like this before, It's so unique. The back and forth between reports, online chats, surveillance footage and more made this so exciting and really built tension. By the end I was madly turning pages to see what happened next.

As I was reading I could see every detail so clearly, and could imagine this would make an amazing movie! I felt truly terrified of the people infected with the virus, and at times was right there with Kady in the end. SCARY!!

There were a few things I didn't see coming, but with the pace of the book you were swept off again and weren't given time to pause and let it sink in.

There are lots of questions that need answers, so I can't wait to see what the next books have in store for us!!

I love the way this book plays with its presentation. The story is fast-paced and the various different diegetic formats worked together to heighten the stakes and show different perspectives. Especially with the transcribed videos, there is a strong voice to the characters who are taking part in putting together the files.

And look, it's YA. It's very YA. The characters are fun, but are suffering from the unavoidable condition of being teenagers; the plot is fairly simple and there are no surprises or big questions--but it's a lot of fun.

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel going into this series, but seeing as I have read These Broken Stars and had just finished another Sci-fi-ish book, I decided to finally give it a shot. The format it was written in also drew my interest. I was not let down.

As soon as I started reading it I was hooked and didn't want to put it down. Everything that kept happening just lead to me having more and more questions! As I got farther into it, I was not really sure how they were going to connect a second book because I seemed like everything was winding down, but NOPE! Even more plot twists happened and now I can't wait to start Gemina.

Over all, even though the book was huge and sometimes really hard to hold, I loved the format and all the twists and turns. Nothing was really that predictable to me and when everything started to come together at the end it just made me wish there was more pages left!

I absolutely LOVE this book! From the story to the format, I was hooked.

While I have the physical copy, I saw a few people say the audiobook was amazing for this book. I must say, I agree! I downloading the audiobook from my library to use while reading this book. I would recommend having both if possible. The audiobook took this book to another level with the way the voice acting.

The book itself, just as great. The layout of the pages made me nervous at first but I quickly grew to love them. I have never read a book with this layout before and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series.

At first, this was slow-going for me. I immediately loved the formatting, but the fact that I'm not a huge sci-fi person made it hard for me to get into this book. I kept glazing over in some sections which caused me to have to reread the same section a couple times to really understand what I just read. It took me a few tries to get past the same point I would always stop at every time I picked it up. I remembered hearing and reading such good things about Illuminae that I was unwilling to give up on it even after the 3rd time I put it down! Let me tell you, it was worth picking up one last time! Though it was only about page 300 that it finally hooked me, I was invested completely when it did.

The format of this book made it so easy to say "one more page, one more page". I love when books are formatted in an unconventional way. It's a nice change of pace when they are! And this format works so well for the story told in Illuminae.

Illuminae was one of those stories that made me realize I actually cared a lot about the characters only after events happen that could have very well taken those characters away from me. I even wrote down "Do I even really care about so-and-so?" only to go back and write "YUP I CARE. I CARE A LOT." Some books persuade you to care about and sympathize with its characters immediately. Others let their characters subtly worm their way into your heart and only when you realize you could lose them do you actively begin to care. That's the type of book Illuminae was for me and honestly, I'm alright with that! The most important thing to me when I read is how much I care about characters and Illuminae was still able to get me to do that so I'm happy!

Overall, it was an enjoyable reading experience and I'm glad I stuck with it this time around. I'm already thinking of when I can get my hand on the next installment, haha!

The book was slow for the first third or so, but had such an incredible and compelling plot throughout. The short document style of writing makes the book a quicker read than it seems. A really interesting and new way to present science fiction horror.
