4.5 stars, I loved this book! I'll be recommending it to everyone!
Enjoyed the conversation nature of this book, and how straight up the kid is with his audience. Very sad at times, but I'm not sure what I expected. Probably why Book Riot's Read Harder challenge included "a book that is by or about someone from an indigenous culture." It's a sad lot in life. I'm grateful to be one of the not poor, white kids from Reardan.
Trigger warnings - racial slurs, homophobic slurs
I borrowed this book from my brother but had no idea what to expect. What I got was a thought provoking and hilarious book about a person dealing with racial issues and parental expectations. A Great read.

I really enjoyed this book. Junior goes from hopeless to hopeful in such a realistic way, while also dealing with such complex emotions. I wish i had read this book back when I was in middle or high school.
Graphic: Alcoholism, Bullying, Chronic illness, Cursing, Death, Eating disorder, Homophobia, Racism, Vomit, Grief, Car accident, Death of parent, Fire/Fire injury, Alcohol, Colonisation, Classism
"'Listen,' he said one afternoon in the library. 'You have to read a book three times before you know it...'" (p. 94)
I think there's really something to that. This is the third time I've read this book and I enjoyed and appreciated it so much more than any other time. Junior's voice is authentic, earnest, and completely relatable. The way he navigates relationships after going to Rearden is something every teen reader can understand.
