Absolutely wonderful read, relateable on every level imaginable. It was laugh-out-loud funny at times, and then two sentences later it would freeze the grin on your face and replace it with a frown or a grimace. And yet, through it all there was an overwhelming sense of hope. Arnold Spirit is one of the most endearing and engaging protagonists I've encountered in a long time.

Thought-provoking and poignant. This book tackled a lot of heavy topics with humor and wit. I loved Junior’s/Arnold’s first person POV style with the comic illustrations. This book is a window into the challenges of navigating his life on the reservation and life in a white dominated school. It also shows some of the real hardships in Indigenous communities like poverty, alcoholism, cultural appropriation, and colonialism. A lot of the funny moments in this book are also heartbreaking. It’s a relatively short book but super engaging and left me with a lot to think about.

Whoa, there are some very racist and vulgar jokes in this book. Did not expect this from a school book. I can see why it's banned in the us.
But it was pretty good. The humour is dark and it's meant to.

This is my second time reading this book and I think it's one that bears revisiting.

It feels true to (what I can only imagine) it must be like growing up as a teen boy on a rez-- the book is heart-breakingly honest at times. It doesn't shy away from depictions of abuse and alcoholism, crude language and bodily functions. And yet, I couldn't describe it as dark or hopeless.
I highly recommend this one.

Fell in love with this book right from the get go. Sherman Alexie has managed to illustrate this coming of age story with great humor and poignancy. So good!

DNF. I really enjoyed the first half of this book until I found out that he has admitted to multiple sexual harassment charges (source NPR article).
