I read this as a bit of a break between a bunch of World War II books I'm reading for book clubs or because they're on awards lists this year. It was a departure from 1940s Europe, but gut-wrenching in its own way. I love Schmidt's writing, and this holds true here. Beautiful writing, clear, honest story, tone of hope and love.

But have tissues handy.

I’ll write a review as soon as I stop sobbing. You should read this immediately.

so much pain in such little pages. i was very nervous about reading this one, reviews all seemed to be the same. discussing how emotional it made them, how easily they cried. they’re not wrong. i so desperately wanted a good life for joseph, he was so young, so hurt already. it makes me think of the good we can make in someone’s life, how quickly that happens. he died to protect the one who always had his back. jack’s always gonna know where jupiter is, she’s loved just the way joseph needed to be. i don’t know if i would make this a re-read, it would take me awhile to do so, but i’d love my own copy just incase. first time reading anything by this author, as it is with most of my reviews, but i was blown away by how great of story this was for how short it was.

Wanted to read something else by this author (because Okay For Now was so awesome), and this was good. Especially great for middle through high school.

Stunning, heartbreaking, beautiful. I love the protagonists voice, the nuances of the way he speaks, the way he has certain phrases and the absolutely mesmerising theme running through the book. It's not often a story can bring me to tears, but this did. A must read

Short and heartwrenching.
I cannot believe that happened. Just when things looked to be almost better. The worst happened.
