Oh this one is good, so good. I sped through it so quickly. The thought experience of “what would happen if everyone gets a wish all at the same time?” is a fun rabbit hole to go down, and they do it so cleverly here. Highly recommend.
I found myself regularly delighted by the many considerations of how humanity would shape the world if each given the same amount of power with varying degrees of influence, as well as what kind of a wish each person would aim for here— how we'd attempt to meet our deepest needs when given a sudden shot at instant gratification, how we'd interact with each other if power dynamics ramped up super weird out of nowhere, and what we'd want from our lives afterward. But it seemed like only in the final chapter was there a real evaluation of people, yearning, self-realization, and cosmic existentialism. There's certainly related conversations throughout, but they're mostly suited for the characters to take with them rather than the reader. I don't believe every piece of art has to bestow something special upon each observer who takes it in, but this thing seemed primed for that, as if it were always on the verge of what it all means — to be human, to be genie, to be alive, to be, simply. I felt like characters were assigned a specific trait, quality, hope, desire, or action that made them significant in that way and then it ultimately served to get them from Point A to Point B. I guess I just expected it to offer insight into what it meant to be that person/kind of person in the end. But I suppose that was just my wish.
