In retrospect, I like this a lit more than My year of rest and relaxation. Eileen is truly a twisted character, her inner dialogue truly nauseating and hard to swallow. Not much happens until the last 50 pages or so, but I honestly enjoyed those the least. Eileen is repressed, afraid, vile, filled with horrible thoughts for herself and others, and that just makes her a fascinating character to read about.

I found Eileen interesting as a character but the “cave” scene made me cringe hard.

Disgusting, drunk, dirty, starving, longing, aching, wanting, needing, bleeding, dying, up in flames then reborn from stinking ashes. Thus is the life cycle of Eileen. Moshfegh writes with guts, her pen a triple dog dare, her page a mirror.

I don't think this is as shocking as Moshfegh thought it was.
