Multiple timelines in 1908, 1934, and 1988 following Alba, Beatrice, and Minerva who all have mysterious things in common. At first a little confusing, but after a bit it becomes clear how these stories intertwine.

This book included some of my favorites: occult rituals, witches, warlocks, academia, and horror lit. This was an atmospheric, well written family saga horror.

Love the concept of the teyolloquani and was expecting to go more freaky w that. Or more payoff with studying Tremblay but she wasn’t even rly important at all??? Everything was super predicable and not satisfying idk

Minerva is a graduate student from Mexico trying to finish her Master’s thesis at Stoneridge. Minerva had chosen Stoneridge because of its ties to Beatrice Tremblay, an obscure horror writer. Tremblay had supposedly based her one novel on a real event from her life, and Minerva hopes that her thesis can link Tremblay’s novel with the history of witchcraft in New England. Working through Tremblay’s personal letters and journals for her research, she discovers the story of Tremblay’s former roommate who disappeared mysteriously. Minerva is reminded of her own great-grandmother’s stories of the visit from her uncle that changed her life. His visit was accompanied by tragic losses that were blamed on witches and curses. As Minerva’s work progresses, strange things start to happen to her. Is she also cursed by a witch? And can she find the truth before it happens to someone else?

An excellent story about witches and curses. The three stories of the three women are woven together very well, and there are plenty of good scares throughout. It started a little rough at the beginning, but once it gets going its very excellent. Really enjoyed this one. This is Moreno-Garcia at her best.

A bit of a slow start, but I loved following the three different women and how everything came together in the end. The mystery was a little obvious but satisfying to read nonetheless
