Minerva, Betty, Ginny, Alba. Four women in three separate generations, connected by a black thread of witchcraft. Think dark magick, folklore, generational trauma. Unfortunately I just didn't find it all that exciting. I'm a very character-driven reader in that often they are what makes or breaks a book for me. I can excuse a lot if I like the characters or are at least interested in them. Unfortunately I thought 1998's Minerva was somewhat dull. Betty's story of 1934, told through her manuscript, didn't paint a very clear portrait of her as a person, focusing instead on Ginny and her disappearance. As a result, Ginny is much more fleshed out than Betty. Alba is probably the most interesting of the four, not that that's saying much. And that's mostly because the historical 1908 rural Mexico setting was intriguing. By the 75% mark I realized I was just reading to get through it. I wasn't all that invested in the ending, although it did all tie together neatly. It's definitely not a bad book. I didn't connect with it, but that won't stop me from reading more of Moreno-Garcia's work.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia writes books that make you think and scare you to the core.

In her latest work, "The Bewitching," she takes the reader through three generations, all of whom are impacted by witchcraft in differing ways.

From 1908 to 1934 to 1998, we meet and follow different women, all strong in their ways for each time period. She also surrounds them with characters that are supportive and suspicious, and keeps you guessing as you move through these experiences with them.

What I love about Moreno-Garcia's books is the frankness with which she addresses the supernatural and the overlapping real-world issues she uses as a lens to examine elements of society.

I read her books with bated breath-- anxiously awaiting the next reveal.

A grad student researches the disappearance of a young woman at her college 60 years before she arrived which involved a beloved author. In flashbacks to the time of the disappearance and further flashbacks to the student's great-grandmother's life in rural Mexico, the supernatural starts to surface. Is the family cursed? Is the young woman talking to the dead? Is there something unseen follow them all?

The three stories are told in parallel - a nod to the circular nature of the stories themselves and the wards against evil that they employ. Unusually for me, I was happy reading each narrative - they were well-balanced and equally strong.

Moreno-Garcia gives us light horror. There are definitely a couple nerve-wracking scenes and some classic tropes but nothing to unsettle a wimp like me too much. I think her books serve as a great entrĂ©e into the genre for readers.

This one took me a bit to get into but I was completely hooked by halfway.

A really good story of witchery, inheritance, and power.  Three different timelines woven together to form a whole, and even if a bunch of the reveals are telegraphed well in advance, that's not necessarily a problem.
