Everything Silvia Moreno Gracie writes is gold. An awesome horror / suspense story across a century through three POVs
Truly a masterpiece. My favorite of hers since Mexican Gothic.

Witches and academia is such a delicious combo. I enjoyed the three POVs, the way they intertwined. I especially enjoyed how the ability of magic itself isn’t good or bad, but a tool to be honed by the user. It’s the people who are good and evil. As it should be. SMG novels are always a masterclass in setting and vibes and The Bewitching is definitely no exception. I haven’t meandering through a location like this since Thirteenth Tale or The Secret History.
The pacing was at times a bit cumbersome but that could have been a me thing. I wanted the mystery (especially in Minerva’s chapters) to move along a liiiittle quicker. The payoff is pretty rewarding though.

Graphic: Incest, Cannibalism
When I was a young girl, there were witches.
I wasn't sure about this one when I started it: multiple POVs across time often doesn't work for me, and the book starts slow. But as always, Moreno-Garcia delivers. I was impressed with the way her authorial voice changes in the chapters meant to represent a manuscript within the world of the book. And the steady horrible build of tension through the book, especially the 1998 chapters was thrilling. This is a fantastic example of a book that will leave you feeling a little nervous looking out your windows at night or when you feel an odd noise behind you, but that doesn't completely scare the shit out of you. That delicious creeping horror. Mwah, exquisite!
