In a nutshell: Tom Davis was born. He did a lot of drugs. He teamed with Al Franken. He did more drugs and traveled. He wrote for SNL. He did A LOT of drugs. The end. Not exactly what I was hoping for from this book.

Davis' book is like a window into the world of vintage Saturday Night Live...and his circle of friends is fascinating, ranging from fellow writers and cast members on SNL to pop culture icons like Timothy Leary, Jerry Garcia, G. Gordon Liddy, and the guys from Monty Python.

I picked up this book as an avid Saturday Night Line fan through the years. There are some fun stories about SNL with its stars and writers but the book disappointed on the whole. The book jumped around chronologically making it hard to follow and the connective tissue was drug consumption of every sort. The content about Al Frankenstein and Dan Ackroyd was probably the highlight. Davis is a big fan and friend of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. Davis has lived an interesting life but the telling of it would have been much better with more organization in the presentation.

Audio book, read by the author. Jumped around so much, it would have sounded nearly the same on shuffle play. Would have given up on this book if Tom Davis wasn't so darned funny. He also does a spot-on impersonation of Al Franken, which isn't surprising.

I skimmed it. Enough interesting moments jumped out to make it worth the time. But the drug-use (even though not surprised) is enough for me to want to give this a lower rating.

August, 2016.

What a mess! I had...er.... well, I had mediocre hopes for this book. Davis spent time with a lot of funny people, but unfortunately they don't appear in this book very often. Most of the book is about his girlfriends or his drug use, and even the parts that aren't are frequently interrupted by a memory of a girl or a drug experience. I couldn't finish this one, and I'll stick to Franken's books in the future!

Do you want to read a book about the early days of SNL? Great! So do I. However, this is not that book. However, if you are looking to read a jumbled, all over the place memoir that mentions SNL in passing, but basically boils down to "I did drugs. I did drugs with famous people" then this is the book you want to read.

I read half and couldn't take it any longer.
