This was amazing. The two sisters had to go on a long trip for their dying grandmother, the reward was a once in a lifetime trip home on the Hindenburg. As the trip goes along the girls learn more about each other and themselves.
This book was really good dealt a lot with reconnecting with family.
Violet doesn’t have much time left. She convinces her granddaughters, estranged sisters Clara and Madeline, to take a European trip that echoes one she once took with her sister, Margaret. At a point in her life where she wants secrets out in the open and apologies voiced, Violet asks the girls to hand deliver three letters.
Each letter corresponds to a leg of their trip. As the girls follow in their grandmother’s footsteps, fences are mended, hearts are open, and lives are changed. Loved.
Hazel Gaynor is quickly becoming an immediate yes for me. She has a way of penning the most memorable, inspiring, poignant female characters. So good. Easy 4.5 stars.

1937 just before Hitler and Mussolini begin to terrorize Europe. A good story, interesting characters, a little contrived but an enjoyable read.
Three Words for Goodbye is a story set in Europe pre–World War 2. The look at the world as it seems unaware of the war that is heading for them was interesting but also scary. While there was talk of Hitler and his army, it was mostly about two estranged sisters who vow to carry out their dying aunts last wishes. In doing so they get the extraordinary opportunity to visit three historic cities and learn about the aunt’s life before she was their aunt.
The relationship between Clara and Madeleine was tough. They did not see eye to eye on anything except that they had to follow Violet’s plan and fulfill her wishes. In their traveling they meet interesting people, see amazing places but most of all they learn to rely on each other. They see things that they will never forget while making memories to last a lifetime.
This is a historical fiction story, but it had many twists. There were unexpected discoveries, secrets revealed, pasts forgiven but not forgotten, and families reacquainted. I loved every word in this book. The descriptions of the people, locations, and surroundings brought the story to life while the emotions and reactions of the characters made them real. I was unable to put the book down and recommend picking up your own copy and losing yourself in the travels of two sisters, following their aunts last wishes.

I LOVED following the adventure of these two dear, sometimes at each other’s throats, sisters. It is a beautiful story that explores family and love. If European historical fiction is your thing, give it a read!
It’s 1937 and Violet Bell brings granddaughters Clara and Maddie Sommers to the family estate in East Hampton, N.Y. As the matriarch is succumbing to cancer, her dying wish is for the two sisters, who are very different and don’t care much for one another, to travel to Europe together and deliver three letters of farewell. Adventurous Maddie, is ready to go but Clara is planning her wedding and has no desire to leave her fiancée Charles Hancock. She ultimately gives in and the two sisters board the Queen Mary for a trip not only designed to bring closure for Violet but also to bring the two sisters together. The trip takes them to Paris, Venice and Vienna. It is the golden age of travel with the sisters experiencing the most luxurious modes of transportation of the period. In addition to the ocean liner, they travel on the Orient Express with a return trip home on the Hindenburg.
While there is growing tension and concern throughout Europe over the rise of the Nazis, world events are a small part of Three Words for Goodbye, with the focus on the sisters. Maddie wants to become a journalist, emulating her idol Nellie Bly, who was a friend of the family. Clara starts to wonder if her seemingly perfect future with Charles is what she truly wants. The journey give the sisters a chance to reconcile as the letters they deliver will reveal family secrets long kept hidden.
Writers Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb have written their own engaging novels and also write historical fiction together (Meet Me in Monaco was their second novel.) Their latest book is centered on family, love and forgiveness. It’s an appealing escape filled with engaging characters, a touch of romance, picturesque settings and interesting modes of travel.
