This was an interesting, good read. Afraid it would be a 'fluff' book, it turned out to be multi- faceted.
The two sisters were quite different and had not been close for years. Going on a trip to Europe together, at their dying grandmother's wish, they had to learn to accept each other without changing who they were. Set in 1937, there were signs of unrest in Italy and Vienna, that was lightly touched on. Between following in Nellie Boy's footsteps, The Orient Express, Queen Mary, and two well off women traveling alone in the world, there was a lot going on. The sisters learned to not only get along, but to value their differences. Definitely recommend!

Violet Bell is dying and before that happens she has a plan. She wants to send her granddaughters, Clara and Madeline, to Europe. Her goal for this trip is to have them deliver goodbye letters to people she loves and to save the sisters' relationship before it's too late. The sisters could not be more different - Clara always does what is expected of her while Madeline lives by her own rules.  As the girls travel Europe via the Queen Mary and the Orient Express, they begin to regain the relationship they lost so long ago.  As they deliver Violet's letters they quickly come to realize that this trip was about discovering family and themselves.

This was a fantastic novel about family, forgiveness, and personal worth. Clara and Madeline's characteristics make the reader become invested in their stories and why they have been estranged. As each sister goes through life-changing moments, you can see how they begin to see the need for each other. I've read a few stories with dual authors and this was one of the best. The writing styles were seamless and the storyline flowed beautifully. This was a terrific partnership that I would love to read again. Each author is wonderful on their own but together they are amazing.

Squabbling siblings travel through pre-war Europe to deliver three letters on behalf of their dying grandmother - including one to her own estranged sister. And as if the threat of Nazis isn't bad enough, they've booked passage home on the Hindenburg!

Clara is a bit of a fuddy duddy, engaged to a controlling man while harboring a crush on her art tutor. Madeleine is a free-spirited would-be reporter who idolizes family friend Nelly Bly. The sights of their journey are nicely depicted through Clara's artistic eye. Madeleine's journalistic observations are rather superficial, though to be fair there's not really anything unique for her to uncover about the rise of fascism.

As their travels take them from the Queen Mary to Paris and on the Orient Express to Venice and then on to Vienna, the sisters learn things about themselves and each other. As expected, the story culminates with the tragic airship crash followed by an emotional resolution.
