Dick Francis wrote some of the earliest audiobooks I ever listened to -- on cassette! #TeamOld

So when I had a chance to listen here through the Audible Plus program, I was happy to do so again.

This is a nice, enjoyable story, something you can listen to in an afternoon while you're knitting. It has an engaging protagonist, a tiny bit of romance, and a slightly twisty plot.

I enjoyed it a lot. Nice, tight storytelling.

Another enjoyable Dick Francis novel. The characters are always so interesting and enjoyable. This time the main character was a kid’s toy designer who became a race horse owner and was a victim of fraud and someone he trusted was stealing from him. How things got resolved was very creative and exciting.

This is my second Dick Francis book and I’m struggling to get into it.

I really loved the first Dick Francis book I read - For Kicks, however, I feel High Stakes lacks the thrilling aspect.

Another winner from Dick Francis, with a very likeable and humble hero. Steve Scott is an Engineer, who got rich by inventing toys. He owns race horses too, but know nothing about horses. His trainer, Jody cheats him over time, with a very crooked plan which would be hard to prove and convict. Scott fires him but he becomes a persona non-grata among the racing circles. The way Jody cheats him and the way Jody gets all the sympathy made me angry.
Our hero is of course clever. How he gets even with Jody makes the book exciting. Along the way, we learn more about horse racing. I also learnt the difference between slander and libel. What more does one need !

Dick Francis’s fourteenth thriller, published in 1976. With Francis, like John Buchan and Ian Fleming, the writing style is so bracing that premise and plot matter less, but here the bad blood toward narrator-hero Steven Scott (also horse owner) from the horse trainer he has dismissed is a fearful thing. The first sentence provides the conflict: “I looked at my friend and saw a man who had robbed me.”

I had forgotten how much I enjoy a Dick Francis novel. He creates very engaging characters and weaves a good story.

I had read this story many many moons ago, and had forgotten just how wonderful it was. Light Romance, little more violence, and a fun mystery all wrapped about the world of British Horse Racing. This time I listened to the tale, rather than flipping pages. The narrator was superb! It made you almost feel that you were sitting in a club talking with the main character.

I’m giving us a 2.5. I thought I like the whole thriller aspect of it by actually cared more for the romance of the story than the actual thrilling plot line. Whenever the plot, main plot, came back into affect I didn’t really pay attention to it. I got really bored! But as soon as the romance aspect came into the story line again and again I was more in tune with that.
