This book will rip your heart to smithereens. Part 3 does require (demand) tissues. IMHO you have to read the other books in the series (including The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) before you touch this one for the full experience. Suzanne killed me but it was worth it. The movie in production is going to break me but dang it take my money.

Absolutely heartbreaking and devastating. Poor Haymitch deserved so much better.

Collins has done it again, this was a great addition to the hunger games series. Hilariously heavy handed in foreshadowing haymitch's drinking problem. His life is much more tragic than I'd imagined and makes his fall from a relatively upbeat kid to a jaded cynic that much sadder

It’s hard to recapture the magic of the original. But this certainly adds nuance and is engaging the way through. There are a number surprises, and clever tie-ins to the original series.
It was impressive how Collins twisted elements around, like the reaping. And that Haymitch was in on the rebel cause since the jump. text

God that was so brutal. Probably the saddest of all the books. Really had the same tone and energy of the first two books.

Suzanne Collins is once again back at it to tear my heart into pieces. Haymitch's slow decent from a boy who was rather content in his life to the shell of a man we meet in The Hunger Games is as soul crushing as it is impossible to turn away from, proving to us if you thought you knew what happened, maybe you too had fallen for Panem's propaganda. The author had something and she slams you in the face with it, and I loved every second of it. Bring tissues with you, you're going to need them
