Bullet Review:

Not my favorite of Gaiman’s offerings. I called the Big Bad’s identity fairly early on, and the story itself is pretty standard fantasy fare. As for the full cast audio drama, I got a chuckle at the placement of some Very Notable Actors (namely Lee and Cumberbatch) on the Dramatis Personae, whose performances were almost cameos. Also, not a fan that of the 3 hours and 48 minutes, over 25 minutes were bloopers and extended scenes.

And now I will have heaps of Gaimanites on my review tearing at my throat, at my incapability to see how amazing this was, at how I rated this a mere 3-stars, at how I’m a grumpy person who doesn’t like anything and why did I read this if I didn’t like this and why spew venom all over someone’s work if I’ve never actually written something...and yeah, that covers most of the comments.

Yay.

Neverwhere is one of my favorite books of Gaiman's. I've both read it and watched the BBC multiple times, and was excited to experience it via the BBC Dramatization.

It did not disappoint. The casting was wonderful, and the production was done really well.

My only quibble, and it's a relatively small one... is I did wonder, without some of the narration, if people who weren't as familiar with the story would always be able to follow what was going on. There were some parts which I wasn't sure the dramatized dialogue quite explained everything. Of course, I can't go back and 'not know' the story, so it was just something which crossed my mind.

I much preferred this version to the audiobook I listened to earlier in the year! it was a lot easier to connect with the characters, and the setting felt substantially more charming and whimsical. the acting and background production definitely played a large part in that, as well as the slightly abridged narrative. I often prefer dramatized versions of Gaiman's stories, and I'm glad I found this one through my local library!

The dramatization was very enjoyable, particularly Christopher Lee as the rather vague Earl and Antony Head as Croup.

However, the audio sound effects were sometimes more confusing than helpful, and there were a few instances that I suspect I wouldn't have understood what was happening if I hadn't already read the book and/or seen the TV show.
