At times it drags, at times it flies. It is a fascinating look at a difficult place (Travnik) during the napoleonic wars.

This is a nineteenth-century novel in style, written in the twentieth century, about a place that's become very important to twenty-first century politics. A new French consul arrives, representing the government of Napoleon. His arrival and that of the Austrian consul shortly after ward stir up the community of Travnik, Bosnia, and we see how the Muslims, Jews, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians, the doctors and peasants and confidence men all react. Along the way, we meet a curious collection of characters. This is no action-adventure novel. It's all about personalities and relationships. If you enjoy that kind of writing, then you will enjoy Bosnian Chronicle.

Ivo Andrić is one of those writers who hasn't written a bad book or bad sentence.
