It’s very different from the movie on the same way that “Perks of Being a Wallflower” is different from the movie. It’s in more of a character-focused, almost diary entry format with significantly less plot than the movie.

I couldn't put this book down when I started. It's a short read and I completely understand why it's so beloved. I read it as a friend sharing their experiences with me so the time line jumps didnt bother me at all. I felt the author was very good at making me feel the way their environment felt withouth needing to go into too much detail and I quite liked the shorter chapter style. While being able to balance being funny and recognizing that these girls where commited for a reason. The last few chapters add an important perspective of social bias of diagnosis and believability of those of us who struggle with mental health. The pages with her medical notes added a lot as well.

This was one of those titles that is so well known, I've thought "I ought to have read this," as it sat on my TBR shelf for years. After picking it up and starting to read it, I very quickly made myself uncomfortable as I thought, "This is.... real. This identifies too well," and realized upon looking more closely that it is, in fact, a memoir. I had never been aware of that. 

This was a quick read but not an insubstantial one. The anthology type storytelling makes it go by quickly, but it gets under your skin at the same time. It's funny and poignant, and I think it sheds light on some pervasive issues with society and mental health issues - and how we view and treat it.

Love the movie and finally got around to reading the book that started it all. It’s a very quick read and easy to fall into. Susanna Kaysen’s writing voice is great and I really enjoyed this book even with its super dark underbelly. 
Don’t expect to get a play-by-play of the movie because the book is at the base the same, but really different once the base has been laid. 
Gotta go watch Girl, Interrupted now. 

Crying score: No, but I think I could have if I weren’t reading at work in public.

Susanna Kaysen gives a raw viewpoint into navigating psychiatry with mental illness. Her stories are not to be taken lightly, but reflected on and empathized with. These stories are more common than we know and need to be shared; they will change the way we think about mental health.
