This book was hard to read because of all the trauma inflicted on the characters by white people during the years of slavery and beyond.

I think I would've really loved this book if I read it in a book club or in a class & had thr time to really analyze and get into it.

Horrific and beautiful. Took me several months to read the first half as I learned to read Toni Morrison’s very distinct writing style (I never thought I would have to look at spark notes past the age of 16, but here we are). Once I got the hang of it I couldn’t put it down. Morrison expertly intertwines the magical realism of one of the scariest ghost stories I’ve ever heard, and the historical perspective of life for black Americans during the war and after the abolition of slavery. Easily the best book I’ve read all year.

Proof that Morrison is a master of her craft, truly. She has such a way of writing traumatized characters who reveal gutting information rather nonchalantly that gives her stories a distinct and eerie sense of realism. So many points throughout this book I was left speechless by how beautiful it was at times, and how full of sorrow it was at others. This should be a required read for pretty much anyone.
