"'The father of my children, whom I love and hate.' Love and hate -- how they tore her asunder! Surely it was time someone invented a new plot, or that the author came out from the bushes. . ."

I WEPT...

Nope, not for me. I'm sure it is very well written...from a poetical standpoint. But as a novel, it just doesn't hold up. Unbelievably boring! But not only boring, unbelievably unclear! A jumble of words that occasionally make sense. An array of unlikeable characters adds to my antagonism towards this book. Everything about this book is the epitome of pretentious!

I will say though, that it is an interesting study in relation to Virginia's mental state at the time. But unfortunately I don't read a book for its psychiatric anomalies.

I repeat. Nope. Not for me. Never again.

Read as a requirement for my Modernism class.

This is not my favourite Woolf I have read. The characters didn't feel as fleshed out as they are in her other works. The chapters where it is just the plays weren't as interesting as the actual characters. This novel (or novella, maybe) just fell flat compared to her other writings. Can't say this was super enjoyable.
