The book paints a vivid picture of life in St. Petersburg around 1866. A lot happens in the first chapter, but after that it becomes somewhat long-winded at times, there is a lot of suffering, it could have been a bit more to the point.

It took me a while to really get into the book, hence why it took me so long to finish it. This was my first Dostoevsky book which is why when I started reading Crime and Punishment I found it rather confusing and did not really understand what was going on. This is probably due to me not being fully open to the book being different and in my opinion a rather hard read. However after putting Crime and Punishment aside for a few months and starting anew when I had the time for reading something harder and different I really got into Dostoevskys Style of writing and I started to enjoy the experience of reading this book. I would say while reading I found this book quite unsettling and maybe even upsetting since it tackles very heavy topics. However I personally was a great fan of the ending, during certain parts where Dostoevsky was simply yapping away I was getting a little bit bored but pushing through those parts was very rewarding since the ending is where everything actually comes together.

Crime and Punishment reads as a retrospective of the impoverished and intellectual Raskolnikov and how his two murders have ruined his and the people around him’s life. This book is Dostoevsky’s most accessible: it’s easy to follow through, has beautiful prose, and has an enticing thriller as its main plot. Though, if one wants to learn a thing or two from this novel, what would it be? First, it is a deep insight as to how a guilty conscience can control a man and drive him to insanity plus learn a few things about the psychology and the human condition. Second, you will learn aplenty on how to write enticing characters, juicy subplots, and how to he descriptive and emotional in your writing without breaking the “show and not tell” rule.
Absolutely wonderful book, one of my favorites of Russian literature.

A dense text yet an extremley rewarding read. Dostoyevsky weaves a complex, existential web throughout the novel which creates a truly intriguing character study of a book.
