Dense but thorough. Recommend if you're interested in the history of translation, how translation at the UN works, how poetry translation works and/or fun facts about languages. Ex. there's an aboriginal tribe in Australia that doesn't have words for left and right, they use cardinal directions (such as east and west) instead.
Although he sometimes needlessly complicated matters and elaborated on a point which could be explained in one paragraph, and didn't always have a good feel for what translation terms people do or do not know... this was a nice book all in all. Because of the diversity of the topics of the chapters, I think this book offers something for every reader who is interested in translation.
Much more theoretical than i anticipated, but really fun thought exercises around different concepts of language building/forming and how concepts can or can't be pulled across different language/culture/etc
This a really fascinating look at the art and science of translation. It covers most of the issues you might expect - what gets translated; the struggle between accuracy and fluency; and nitty-gritty examples of the translational dilemmas. It also has some fascinating sections on things like the Nuremberg trials, machine-aided translation even the origin of language.
The book reads more like a series of essays rather than a structured argument, which makes it a good candidate for dipping into.

A wonderfully optimistic overview of all things translation, written for beginners or really anyone with passing interest. Plenty encouraging for the beginning translator. Funny, too.
