I'm having trouble finding the words to sum up this book and my feelings thereof. I apologize, but I won't say too much about the actual contents here, because just about anything is a spoiler, is typically Chuck Palahniuk fashion.
I enjoyed Fight Club immensely, still do. My love for such a fantastically crafted tale sparked an interest in pursuing more of Palahniuk's work, though it always ended up getting pushed to the back burner as other books caught my attention. FINALLY, I stumbled across this book in a Little Free Library while walking the neighborhood. I thought, "Hell, fate must have brought this my way!" Of course, I picked this doozy up. Oh man, I has NO idea what I was picking up.
Listen, I'm not faint at heart. I have a strong stomach. I'm not a prude, nor do I find it unappealing when the realities of sex and money intermingling is brought to my attention. I like books that are unashamed. I love when crazy ideas are experimented with. It's important for art to always be testing the walls around it, pushing back as society may try to close it in.
That being said, I think I may have wasted my time on this one. Sure, it was cool to read a story set in the porn industry. Sure, I loved Palahniuk ability to really capture the ambiance of his setting and characters. Sure, the puns within porn titles made me chuckle...until the 200th one flashed across my eyes. Other than that? I found this one predictable, and the length completely unnecessary. The exposition went on far to long, it seemed we were to be more concerned with men bronzing their bodies and jerking off than we were to actually be learning about the main characters or what the plot even was.
Palahniuk, I don't want to give up on you. Tell me there's something Fight Club quality to redeem you?
