um?? insane. this was my first palahniuk book and i was expecting exclusively raunch, but it was kind of devastating and ridiculous at once. solid pace and build; i speed-read the last 100 pages because i was so thrown.

After [b: Rant|22285|Rant|Chuck Palahniuk|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388248283l/22285._SX50_.jpg|2902758], I was excited and hopeful at the thought that Palahniuk might be trying to move in a new direction, but with Snuff, he backslides into the realm of same-old, same-old. Only, you know, more boring—whether because it’s just such familiar territory, or because it’s inherently dull, I don’t know. Anyway, in an effort to be cruder and more shocking (but not more original) with each successive novel, Palahniuk here turns to the porn industry, but unlike that Thanksgiving dinner-interrupting description of felching in [b: Invisible Monsters|36236125|Invisible Monsters|Chuck Palahniuk|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1508534066l/36236125._SX50_.jpg|849507], nothing here manages to be so awe-inspiringly stupor-destroying—mostly it’s just kind of gross. Nor are the twists twisty or the prose compelling. Frankly, I was bored—and for a shock artist like Palahniuk, that’s almost the worst review one can get.

This was my second time reading this book and I must say, I enjoyed it more my first time. it was by no means bad but I didn't enjoy it as much as I remembered. it just felt a bit repetitive at times and it was a little stale. the ending will always get to me though and clearly I enjoyed it enough to give it 3 and a half stars. there are definitely better Palahniuk books though.
dark funny

Only Chuck Palahniuk could write a book like this. I found it surprisingly deeper than I thought it'd be (that's what he said).

The "what's the difference between training your body to climb Mt. Everest versus training your body for a gang bang?" idea really got me thinking about how society's idea of "health" has become even more skewed since this book came out 15 years ago. People taking yoga classes outside while they're breathing wildfire smoke. Self-proclaimed "health nuts" eating vegan and taking vitamins but doing nothing to stop themselves from contracting avoidable infectious diseases that permanently damage our organs. Anyway.

That ending was absolutely ridiculous in the best Palahniukian way. Hopefully this was the balm my reading slump needed.

I went into this with such high hopes because the concept was so intriguing. This was the first book of chucky’s that I read and I have to say I kind of hated it. The piece achieved what it set out to do, which was leave the reader unsettled but bated just enough to lead them to the conclusion. I’m not a fan of his prose, there was never a point where I hit the rhythm with his cadence in terms of the project as a whole and the individual characters. Honestly… I think I would have liked it better if a woman wrote it. I don’t particularly enjoy when male writers attempt to unpack the interior world of women, especially if the women being depicted are sex workers. You can read all the theory you want, but in what world is a white man who wrote fight club going to even remotely understand the experiences and emotional world of a woman in sex work? Knowing about the existence of Naomi wolf does not validate or prove your understanding of the intricacies of third wave feminism. I finished feeling very nauseous, and to some that’s great and maybe what you are after and maybe that was the entire point of the novel, but I hated it.
