THE ENDING ALWAYS KILLS ME.
WHERE IS MY WIFE?

I had high hopes going into this book because it has always been one of my favorites of the series and it did not disappoint! So many things happen (yet again) in this book, no parts are boring or unimportant. I still don't understand how SJM created this world and this story at such a young age, it's mindblowing. All the reveals and explanation to everything that happened in the past and the events that will inevitably happen in the future we get in this book are just insane.

Surprisingly, my favorite storyline of the story was
SpoilerLorcan and Elide's. The way their relationship starts out as partners with a mutual agreement to help each other out, then slowly growing closer, close enough to imagine and want a future with the other, and end on hate and devastation.
I was so invested in their story, more than any other in this book (a close second is
SpoilerManon and Dorian of course
).

I love Aelin, I love her mind and her scheming. I love Elide being strong and smart despite the horrible things that happened to her. I love Manon for having the courage to
Spoilergo against her grandmother and against everything she knew.
To say the female characters in this series have more impact than the male characters would be an understatement.

This whole series, but especially Empire of Storms and Kingdom of Ash are books that I would sell my soul to reread for the first time again.

overall thoughts

i read this alongside tower of dawn, where i did the tandem read. i definitely liked this book more than tower of dawn, but that's because of my own... feelings about chaol. i felt myself wanting to read more of empire of storm while reading the tower of dawn chapters. that's besides the fact!

i felt like this book had me in CONSTANT whiplash. LIKE, things just kept happening one after another but everything that occurred brought all the characters (besides those in TOD) together. i questioned early on how everyone was going to cross paths again but it seemed inevitable, but it all made sense. ESPECIALLY after learning about the debt when manon and aelin look at memories. WHICH i must say, FUCK ELENA!!!!!! FUCK GAVIN!!!!!!!! DEAD ROYALS SUCK!!!!!!!!! i will not accept the debt that aelin or dorian must pay, there is another way and i KNOW it.

speaking of dorian, that's been my baby since day one. now he's turning into my baby DADDY. THE INVISIBLE HANDS?!?!?! i love rowan but if him and aelin were still endgame like the original draft, i would have eaten that up. BARK BARK BARK.

the thing that really broke my heart was the ending. so many debts called in just to see the mindmaster of them all whipped away by an evil bitch who is enemy #1 in my world. i kNOW things will be fine when all is said and done but i hope maeve gets what's coming for her.

in the end, my ratings are based on vibes and how i felt. if there's something technical i don't like, i'll mention it. :D
