Second in a series. Great story.

Skimmed the last 20% of the book, this destroyed all the things I liked about the previous book. Not sure if I'll read the last book.

I hope that today’s YA writers have taken notes from this series. I have been enjoying revisiting these characters and this world from my past (I had only read the first one, in early high school, and I loved it, but I never got to this one or the last one), and I love the direction the story is going. It features girls learning about power and making tough choices, friendships, betrayals, and the inevitable YA love triangle, which is only SLIGHTLY annoying. My one critique of this installment is how annoying Gemma gets in the middle, as she questions herself and can’t seem to figure out even the SIMPLEST riddle. I’m hoping she’ll be smarter in the next one, although I actually think she’s a very well written character and that she probably would be this dense at times. She’s a young teenager, after all. I will also say that I struggled to figure out the tougher riddles in this story, which is a good thing! The plot is nicely paced and I love stories that keep me guessing.

Rebel Angels is the second book in Libba Bray's Gemma Doyle trilogy. After reading the first book, A Great and Terrible Beauty, I wasn't all that excited to finish the series. I just felt that the book promised something that it couldn't entirely deliver. I'm really glad I gave the series a second chance though, because Rebel Angels was really terrific!

In this sequel, Gemma continues to pursue her destiny as the one who can bring order back to the realms. This book takes place over the winter break for Gemma and her friends Felicity and Ann. After Pippa's death in the first book, Gemma has been too frightened to return to the realms. Now she discovers that she is the only one who can bind the strong magic of the realms, and bring back balance. She must go back through the door of light and find the lost Temple.

But Gemma must be very careful along the way, not everything in the realms (or in the "real world" for that matter) can be trusted. Dark beings are vying for power, beings that refuse to be denied.

Rebel Angels has a complicated and twisting plot. In it we delve further into the magical world of the realms. We are introduced to more interesting characters: the gorgon, punished for her role in the uprising, bound to serve the Order for all time; the untouchables, creatures living in the forbidden Cave of Sighs; the evil poppy warriors, creatures who try to mislead the girls and capture the magic for themselves; and the water nymphs, who sing a siren's song to entrance the girls and steal their skin.

The story is a traditional Gothic terror/suspense, complete with Victorian setting, foggy, misty woods, and even a lunatic asylum. It is extremely well written, rich with imagery, passion, secrets and intrigue, and of course magic. Rebel Angels is a thoroughly enthralling novel, and I was spellbound from almost the first page. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book!

Execptional!

wow. wow. WOW!! I THOUGHT I WAS AT A LOSS OF WORDS FOR THE FIRST BOOK, BUT THIS IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT EXTREME!! I LEGITIMATELY CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW MUCH I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS BOOK AND TRILOGY. I CAN’T FORM THE WORDS. i will be recommending this trilogy until the day i die.

Well. Just a speculation at this point (because I STILL haven't finished A Sweet Far Thing), but I think Pippa is evil. And Gemma is a dumb@$$ because she is as dimwitted as a twig. And her and Kartik just need to hook up and make it official already, I'm sorry, but it's just taking them too long. They should run away back to India and elope. Then they'll live happily ever after. Just like her mother did. Sort of.

I like the scenes set in London more than in the Realms, but the series is really picking up steam.
