Easiest 5 star rating in long time. A broad brush that hits all of the interesting and astonishing grooves.

Could also be titled A Short History of Everyone Who Never Got Credit For Their Discoveries. Seriously, the list is shockingly long.

Interesting read, very heavily focused on science rather than historical events but overall informative

Bill Bryson is the kind of person I would happily be trapped in an elevator with. You can feel how genuinely curious he is and he has a knack for finding out and sharing all the tidbits that I'd most love to learn as well. Concise nuggets that give you an idea of what a historical figure might have been like as a person. Chatty and self-deprecating.

I actually really liked this one! Definitely wouldn’t be my first choice but it was SO interesting. Bryson goes very in depth and it definitely got me thinking. It’s really long and not the most exciting but it is very informative and at some moments had me thinking “Oh yea where did that theory come from and who made it?”. Also I absolutely hate science and I liked this book so I guess that goes to show that it’s a good book.

Bill Bryson has an incredible knack for making complex ideas understandable. He distills millions of years of natural history into this one volume. An awe-inspiring read.
