Jesmyn Ward’s writing is simply gorgeous! The mixture of spiritual old world, generational poverty, loneliness, addiction, and family motifs are at once heartbreaking and true.

Beautiful and painful. I’m new to Jesmyn Ward but her ability to describe emotion and make you empathize with the characters is remarkable and I love her for it. I felt everything that Jojo and Leonie felt. I felt most connected to JoJo and it’s weird because I feel like I know him and I’m now worried about him.

I got some Of Mice & Men vibes from this too. Also Toni Morrison vibes.
