Sing, Unburied, Sing

Jesmyn Ward

4.07 AVERAGE

Ghosts both literal and metaphorical infuse this beautifully rendered story. The sharply drawn characters make evident that the sins of the past cannot to relegated to history as they continue to haunt and manifest into the lives of those who inhabit the present.
adventurous challenging dark slow-paced

there’s something special about a book who’s title clicks into place as soon as you read the last page

Wonderful and heartbreaking. A beautiful look into an average family and the long term effects of oppression and hatr. I had to take a break from it, but glad I finished it.

it is miraculous (& the result of pure stubbornness) that i managed to finish this book. this is definitely a case of ‘it’s not you it’s me’. there is clearly a large audience for this book. i am just not in that group.

nonetheless, i really appreciated the conversations had throughout this book & the writing was undeniably stunning.

p.s. i really need to stop picking up magical realism. i don’t think i understood the through line chapter to chapter for the majority of this book.

p.p.s. intense beloved by Toni Morrison vibes

truly a captivating and powerful read on intergenerational incarceration, the thin line the separates history, and family.

I mean, beautifully written. Poetic, imaginative, and truly beautiful writing. But as a person who works with many JoJos of the world, I am wondering what he is left with? After Kayla guides those spirits away, what is the lesson JoJo learns? How are he and Pop going to survive the loss of Mam? There never has to be a full circle moment, but this left me in the stratosphere.
