Agh. My FIRST DNF (did not finish.)
I don’t know if it was because I was listening to the audiobook instead of physically reading it, but I literally zoned out every time I listened to this book. I got so confused between when the mom was high vs. sober. I also didn’t understand Given Not Given and who was visiting Jojo.
It was just too much back and forth and I always lost track. Nothing hooked me in this book.

This was such a powerful, haunting and sad read. For the first half of the book I was feeling 3 stars. The opening scene of the book is a very graphic slaughtering of a goat for the family dinner, which was an intense place to start. And just generally a slow start. And then as you’re approaching midway through the book, you start to realise that there’s an immense climax building up. And the ending is a weird chaotic unfolding of events which left me with chills.

The author does that thing that I love where she doesn’t blatantly and outright tell you about the characters, but instead she shows it to you slowly, and so you don’t quite feel attached to the characters until about halfway through the book. At which point, you want to go back and read the book from the start knowing what you do know about each person.

I liked how depending on the POV, the same person might be called a different name. Eg Pop/River, Kayla/Michaela. It was a really good way to write distinct perspectives. And I found that the characters were very complex and layered, something that the author weaved into the story not in what she said but rather in what she didn’t say.
