plot was tedious, characters and themes were underdeveloped
Just wow. Ward's writing feels descended from the great Toni Morrison and this heartbreakingly beautiful novel explores the spectre of slavery, lynching, and Jim Crow.

I bought this book as an afterthought at the airport. Hadn’t heard anything about the author but the title captured me as poetic.
I’m so happy for my fascination for titles! Dear lord what a beautiful and compelling book. Complex characters and when you think it’s black and white the author twist’s it and you don’t really know what to feel.
What I loved most was the poetic language and the rich story. Brb going out to find all of Jesmyn Wards earlier work.

Wow - I just devoured it. I feel such tenderness for the characters, especially Jojo, and will carry them with me for a long time.

Loved this audio book and couldn't put it down. The writing is so smooth and rhythmic and the scenes are so vivid I felt I could see and smell particular scenes.
A small pet peeve of mine is when a narrative is told from the perspective of different characters but the writing of their voices is really indistinguishable except for a chapter title (or in this case, a different voice actor). I felt Leonie and Jojo had the same voice and cadence. Overall a small quibble for a truly beautiful story.

Beautiful and unconventional. Masterful use of language to blend two unlikely worlds.
