Soooo, another book I got halfway through and then decided to move on. I liked the book for what it was--I loved the symbolism and the prose and the addition of spirituality and paranormal, and of course respected the historic perspective on the treatment of black people in the south... but it's just not my usual read, and the stroyline overall was depressing not only because of the discrimination and violence towards black people, but also the drug addition and child abuse throughout the novel. I'm just not in the right mindset for a novel like that right now and, while very eye-opening, probably not something I should really invest my time in when I'm raising a toddler and expecting a newborn any day now.

I was really looking forward to reading this book. But unfortunately it just wasn't my cup of tea. There were good moments with good drama and character storylines. Then it would drift into lyrical poetry moments that I just felt were out of place. But this is just my opinion.

i think i enjoy toni morrison more when it comes to these subjects

the ending is INCREDIBLE. the only thing that is keeping this from a 5 star are the ghosts. i understand their importance to the story, but it took me out of the realism a little bit. ward is such an incredible writer though oh my goodness.

I was blown away by this book. Beautiful and haunting it pulls at the very tendons of my heart and soul. Ward stretches my understanding of truth and "rightness" asking me to set aside judgment to bear a person's reality alongside them. The writing was poignant and emotional while being rooted in the dustiness of everyday life. It only spans a couple of days yet I feel like I have walked miles and years with these characters. Their story isn't my story, their history isn't my history, but I was given a window into their lives and it has left me with compassion, a widened lens and a glimpse into another's truth. I hope to read much more of Ward's work in the near future.

I think I liked Salvage the Bones more, the magical realism genre isn't my favorite.
