I was so excited when I initially saw the book, but the rhythm was off. Disappointing.

Some liberties are taken with the song, but the illustrations are fun. We will see what the nephew thinks.

This was given as a gift to the boys. I was curious about this series and was glad we didn’t spend money on it. It is an interesting idea, I believe, based off the Old Lady who Swallowed A Fly. However, as someone who helped treat those with swallowing addictions, this book bothered me and I found it odd. The ending fixed that but as a mom that is constantly worried about kids swallowing random things, it was stressful.

I realize this might be overreacting but it was just an odd book.

If you were searching for an-old-lady-vomits-an-Easter-basket book, you've found it. Having said that, the kids enjoyed it, and it is fairly humorous. I can see it offending some, however -- being a bit over the top.

I have to start off by clarifying that I mostly dislike seasonal books. Halloween-themed baby/children's books, for example, are ridiculous. And I don't mean Goosebumps or Scary Stories, I mean the books that (sometimes literally) scream Halloween at you.

For instance... this book. What is the point? It starts off really well. This old lady swallows all these typical Halloween creatures like a ghost or a goblin. The build-up is so intense and so funny and exciting. It isn't too bad. I almost change my mind about Halloween-themed books.

Well, all she does is yell "Trick or Treat" at the end. And that's it. There is no point to the story, no coherent ending. It makes you feel like the author had to use it somehow because of Halloween and all... and that's why I loathe Halloween-themed books. It's like throwing a bunch of gross keywords into a cauldron, stirring it frantically, gulping down the whole green, gooey mess in one go, then projectile-vomiting it onto a blank page and THEN... selling the final, disgusting product as a book... Some kid's books treat children like they're complete idiots and I don't like that attitude. Just stick to the regular "The Old Lady Who Swallowed" books...

Though I don't really like the illustration style, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I loved the rhymes and tidbits of educational information about the sea creatures mentioned. I also loved how the story wrapped up as a fun daydream of the aquarium docent or marine biologist or whoever the woman was supposed to be. This is a delightful addition to my mermaid book collection!
