Satisfying in every way. Lush, absurd, laugh-out-loud funny, sensitive, and deeply moving in the end. An impressive feat by Wilkie Collins who sustained my interest for nearly 500 pages. It's wonderful to imagine all the readers in 1868 anxiously awaiting the release of the next part of the serial. The suspense would have been unbearable!
A cozy little (long) mystery for Victorian Lit! Towards the end, I was LOCKED IN on this book. Waiting for the bus, READING. Eating lunch, READING. In between sets at the gym, READING. It was that good!
In some respects, this book was exactly what I wanted - no relation to current events, I wasn't emotionally invested in the characters, so it wasn't stressful at all. It was a fun mystery story with twists and turns I didn't expect. On the other side, it was very long winded with some racism and misogyny, which I expected in a novel from this time period.

It really draws you in. The only complaint I have is the back half has a feeling of taking forever to get to the point that was a little frustrating.
