Quirky. Wordy. Full of British pompous, chuckle chuckle humor. Probably wouldn’t read again. But I can see how it was the book to set the precedent for future mystery writers like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, etc.

Ένα εκπληκτικό πρώιμο αστυνομικό θρίλερ, γραμμένο με σταθερή πένα, ευφυία, γνώση των διαδικασιών (αστυνομική έρευνα, ιατρική πρακτική) της εποχής και με ένα χιούμορ που (φτάνοντας κάποιες φορές στα απολαυστικά όρια σαρκασμού και ειρωνείας) κάνει απρόσμενα την εμφάνισή του και ανεβάζει ακόμη περισσότερο την εικόνα του έργου.
Μέσα από τις διηγήσεις πολλών εκ των συμμετεχόντων, είτε άμεσες είτε έμμεσες, είτε ειλικρινείς είτε όχι, συλλέγουμε τα στοιχεία για την εξαφάνιση μιας πολύτιμης πέτρας (προφανώς αυτή που αναφέρεται στον τίτλο) και των συνεπειών που έχει η εξαφάνιση αυτή για όσους έμεναν κάτω από την ίδια στέγη τη νύχτα που έλαβε χώρα, καθώς και για τις προσπάθειες ανεύρεσής της.
Ενδιαφέρον στοιχείο αποτελεί και ο "ντετέκτιβ", ο προσληφθείς από την πληγείσα οικογένεια αστυνομικός που επιφορτισμένος με το καθήκον να ακολουθήσει τα ίχνη της χαμένης πέτρας, πατάει στέρεα στη λογική και την ακολουθεί για την εξαγωγή των συμπερασμάτων του, βλέπει ίχνη εκεί που όλοι οι άλλοι τα προσπερνάνε και αξιολογεί τις καταστάσεις καλύτερα κι από όσους τις έζησαν, χάρη στο κοφτερό του μάτι, την αναλυτική του ματιά και τη μέθοδό του. Το ότι δεν είναι αλάνθαστος, δεν τον υποβιβάζει σε σχέση με άλλους "ομολόγους" του (βλ. Σέρλοκ Χολμς για παράδειγμα), αλλά τον καθιστά πιο πιστευτό σα χαρακτήρα και πιο ανθρώπινο. Όλοι οι χαρακτήρες του έργου είναι ολοζώντανοι, τρισδιάστατοι, έγχρωμοι και ενδεικτικοί της εποχής του, σε αντίθεση με το σύγχρονο μέσο όρο που περιορίζεται σε 2 διαστάσεις κι αυτές ασπρόμαυρες.
Κεφάλαιο το κεφάλαιο, ο συγγραφέας κρατάει στα χέρια του το ενδιαφέρον του αναγνώστη (ίσως κάνει μια ελάχιστη κοιλιά στην αρχή του δεύτερου μέρους, αλλά είναι σχετικά ασήμαντη) και παίζει με τις ιδιοσυγκρασίες όσων καταθέτουν την "αλήθεια" τους, τις ιδιοτροπίες τους, τα πάθη και τις προκαταλήψεις τους, πλέκοντας αργά και σταθερά μια αστυνομική ιστορία που στέκει γερά στα πόδια της ακόμα και σήμερα και διαβάζεται πολύ πιο ευχάριστα από τα πεπραγμένα μεθυσμένων σκανδιναυών.
Από την πρώτη μέχρι την τελευταία σελίδα ο Collins σέβεται και δεν εξαπατά τον αναγνώστη, δεν εμφανίζει στο τελευταίο κεφάλαιο καίριους χαρακτήρες, δεν τον μειώνει αυτόν στον οποίο απευθύνεται (ή το ίδιο του το έργο) με χυδαίες ανατροπές, δεν ανακαλύπτει ξεχασμένα σημειώματα ή σεντούκια, χαμένους από καιρό συγγενείς ή κάτι που θα ανέτρεπε τις καλοζυγισμένες ισορροπίες του βιβλίου. Οι σημαντικές πληροφορίες δίνονται σχεδόν όλες εξ αρχής και τα πάντα χτίζονται, προοικονομούνται, υπονοούνται και ανατρέπονται όταν πρέπει και όταν η αφηγηματική ροή το επιτρέπει (όχι όταν το απαιτεί σαν κακομαθημένο παιδί), ακολουθώντας τον μετρονόμο της γραφής του. Ακόμη και το (δύσκολο να το υποπτευθεί ο εθισμένος στην Νορβηγική αιθαλική λογοτεχνία) τέλος είναι έντιμο, ανθρώπινο και αληθινό σαν βικτωριανό γαντοφορεμένο χέρι που κλείνει το βιβλίο.
