Excellent narration.
I thought this was a very suspenseful detective novel which makes clever use of multiple narrative perspectives. The 'whodunnit' was a little predictable but the method wasn't, so that kept me wondering. I was thrown at first by the casual racism expressed by pretty much all the characters but the ending, whereby the diamond is returned to its rightful owners, suggests to me that the book was intended to be a criticism of colonialism; it's very easy to assume that the views of the characters reflect the views of the author, however I don't think that was the case in The Moonstone.

the first half i found incredibly boring although this may be because i was reading the physical book. i read the second half occasionally in tandem, and occasionally just in audio and found it much more enjoyable. i liked the ending, which i didn't necessarily expect from a book written in the time it was, but seemed to be the best ending. it may be that i found the narrator of the first half dull, but those in the second half, including the comically evangelical miss clack and the very interesting ezra jennings, were much more enjoyable to read. perhaps a fairer view of this book could be gaged if i was to read the whole thing through again, entirely on audio this time, but at this current moment i have no desire to do that.
