Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows is a timeless childrens classic of frolic and whimsy, brought forth by the author’s meditative approach. Despite this, the story is firmly rooted in pre-war optimism, focusing on boating, songs and the comfort of the home, among others. This is best encapsulated when Ratty, enamored by foreign rat’s tales of adventure and exploration, attempts to go off on a journey of his own. However, his friend Mole persuades him to remain in the place that he belongs to, which saves Ratty from his trance. “The Wind in the Willow” may be a story about talking, walking, intelligent animals, but it effectively captures the principles and spirit of a precise time point in English history.

“All this he saw, for one moment breathless and intense, vivid on the morning sky; and still, as he looked, he lived; and still, as he lived, he wondered.”
