I feel that something is often lost in translation when books from the Japanese language are translated to English. Which is not the fault of the author or translator but has begun to put me off reading books translated from Japanese. I find there is commonly a sparcness to the language which can be off putting.

In edition I find many Japanese novels to episodic which isn't my favourite style. As it often means short term character growth is developed over exploring broader themes. A bit like watching a 30min sitcom episode to explore a social issue rather than watching a detailed documentary.

This book was picked as an easy listen while on a long drive and for that purpose it did well.
The book was at times quite funny and I think would be a good listen for someone looking for a heartwarming read.
Having said that there is an initial focus on the main characters depression but the book moves on from this quickly.

Later on another character describes a very dark period in their life and an ongoing illness. I found this harder to read that segments on depression

The book is part of a duology but I don't think I'll continue.
