Well, that was probably the worst read of the year. This book started off okay but the graphic descriptions of horrific body injuries and the graphic descriptions of poop was way too much for me. There was some beautiful stories in this but I will never read another book by this author nor would I recommend this to anyone who does not do well with graphic injuries. This was disgusting and disturbing.

a very important read! the first hand tale of what it's like to leave your home country and everything you love and are proud of there and be transplanted into another country where nobody understands you, is racist and violent, and you experience poverty - told through the voice and narration of a child. So good!

I started this as an audiobook and could not get into it. The second half I switched to reading the ebook and that went better! This book is aimed at YA readers and I like how the author writes so casually and authentically. What I struggled with at the beginning is there isn’t a consistent plot throughout the book - it jumps a lot between Persian myths, stories about his ancestors, and then his own memories as a child. I found it hard to follow when listening so I would recommend reading this over listening to it.
