Ahhh!!

For about 50-60% of this book, it was just ok, probably just a 3 star if that. And then it turned into this beautiful, magical story about family and familial love and finding your place and fitting with your culture. And it was so touching and so emotional. And then Rosa completed her dream and brought her family with her and it was truly magic. And then it brought the weak romance back and dropped from a 4 star to its current rating. While I didn’t love the whole book, there was enough beauty and family magic to make it better than it started.

Gilmore Girls meets Jane the Virgin. This is such a heartwarming, atmospheric read!

Don’t Date Rosa Santos was magic brought to life; each word helped bring together a story that while, yes it had some romance in it, the true love story was about family and the love and heartache that’s felt when you are forced to leave the place you come from.
I felt the pain Mimi and the viejitos had when they spoke about Cuba and their yearning to go back someday and I felt the pride the whole community had for their town.
To me, this was a book that was written with hope for Cuba and it’s future. Truly a magical and beautiful story.

-Bisexual, Cuban-American main character.
-TW: the death of a family member
A soft and quiet YA contemporary, featuring Latinx culture and with the perfect balance between delicious food, magic, and adorable couple moments. There's so much emotion between these pages, so much heartache and my poor heart hurts for Rosa and the Santos family. Curses, complicated mother-daughter relationships, grief but ultimately, hope and dreams and love. This is a story about being in the diaspora and identity, sprinkle with magical realism. One of my favorite books, a story that I will keep close to my heart forever.
Can't wait for Nina's next book. #YellowForRosa forever!

Don't Date Rosa Santos is a heartfelt coming of age tale that is rich with family and culture. Rosa is Cuban American and longs for a deeper connection with her heritage, but the women in her family are cursed by the sea and rarely speak of Cuba and the past.
This book takes place during Rosa's senior year of high school as she navigates choosing a college, romance, and taking risks to find out what she really wants. It is a beautiful, sometimes funny story that explores the complexities of family, trauma, grief, and finding cultural identity in diaspora. There is also a lot of food that will make you hungry! A very well-executed debut that is deeply rooted in Latinx culture and identity with a nerdy heroine you will want to root for. I'm definitely glad I picked this one up.

I..LOVED..THIS..BOOK!
It’s a love letter to Cubans. I am Cuban , raised in Miami . And reading this book was basically like watching my upbringing . From the “Oye no me grites” .. to the “Im telling mom you’re doing brujería !”
I loved everything about this story . I have literally never related so much to any book I’ve read before . It’s written the way I speak (in Spanglish — the language of Miami).
The family dynamics , the love ( for family and relationships ) , The humor , the spirituality . Everything about this book was perfect for me . I absolutely need to read more from Nina Moreno. Her voice is one to be heard .
So many truths in the story ... talk to the world about our Cuba! They all need to know ! Viva Cuba Libre!
