Oh man. This one's a keeper. This is one of those books I know I'm going to come back to again and again. I loved it. Loved it so much I can hardly even put it into words. And to think I bought it from a charity shop and it's been sat on my shelves this past four years! It's about Lady Anna, an aristocratic English widow who goes to Egypt in 1901 and falls in love with Sharif Basha al-Baroudi, so I suppose it's a classic desert romance but it's so much more than that - there are twin storylines following Anna and Sharif in turn-of-the-century Egypt and then their descendants on the eve of the millennium, and it's about the the Occupation of Egypt and the British Empire and the British, French, Arabic and Jewish politics and the conflict between cultures. But oh, I loved it. This is one of the books you actually fall in love with, you know? A real keeper.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. The love story was only okay; the Egyptian politics during the British occupation was hard to follow; and I was a little offended at the blatant anti-semitism/zionism that even the modern-day narrator believed. Eh, better to just skip it.

I could not get past Chapter 5 and never will. Way to unrealistic and uninteresting.

I know people criticize Souef for her "orientalist" style, but I thought this book was at least very well-written and entertaining. She was able to capture the early 20th century English writing style in Ana's diary entries, and I was quite impressed with her ability to do so.

This book took me a while to get into due to the format - a mix of first person narration, letters written by different people, different time periods. But once I got the hang of it, it breezed by. The love story of Anna and Sharif, as told mostly through reading Anna's letters and journal, was beautiful. The book also provided interesting historical/political context of living in Egypt under British colonial rule as well as in the late 1990s.

to simply call this novel a romance would be doing a complete disservice. It is an expertly written, in depth analysis on egyptian and arab colonial and post colonial politics wrapped in a “nice” easy to swallow wrapper such as romance. 3.7 stars

Amal citeşte, citeşte fără oprire, până noaptea târziu. Citeşte şi lasă cuvintele Annei să se reverse înăuntrul ei, cercetând cu blândeţe visele, speranţele şi durerile pe care le aşternuse în ordine, le etichetase şi le pusese deoparte.
Hârtii îngălbenite şi roase de vreme, pagini, pagini întregi. Cele mai multe sunt în engleză, acoperite cu un scris mărunt, ferm, înclinat. Amal le-a sortat după tipul şi dimensiunea hârtiei, după culoarea cernelii. Altele sunt în franceză. Unele sunt puse în plicuri, altele legate neglijent împreună în mape de piele. Mai sunt şi un jurnal verde mare şi un altul legat în piele maro, cu o broască mică, de alamă încastrată în încuietoarea gravată. Amal a găsit mai târziu şi cheia pe fundul unei genţi de pâslă verde – o geantă care îţi trezea o senzaţie de repulsie la atingere, de parcă ar fi fost confecţionată pentru un proiect şcolar – şi împreună cu ea erau două verighete, una mai mică decât cealaltă. S-a uitat cu atenţie la cuvintele inscripţionate în interior şi, la început, singura parte a inscripţiei de pe fiecare inel pe care a reuşit s-o înţeleagă a fost data: 1896. Un plic mare, maro conţinea un singur caiet: şaizeci şi patru de pagini de scris îngrijit cu caractere arabe ruq'a. Amal a recunoscut imediat scrisul: literele verticale, scurte, dar drepte, unghiurile ascuţite, coada lui ya încovrigată sub corp. Scrisul citeţ şi îngrijit al bunicii ei. Hârtia e albă, cu linii înguste, legată între coperte de un gri marmorean. Paginile rigide trosnesc şi opun rezistenţă. First off, thanks so much Penelopewanders for being so understanding of my delay with this book. It's been a bit of a rough summer and my mind just wasn't on reading for the longest time.
But now that I've finished it, and it did take the better part of 3 weeks to finish it (with a short book club book in the middle) I am very glad that I did because I loved the story. I especially found Anna's journal entries to be very moving. I didn't particularly care for the digressions into Egyptian politics as I found these hard to follow, but the basic storyline was quite beautiful.
I've PM the next in line and will send the book out as soon as I have the address.
