Hmm love a critique on late stage capitalism and the absurdity of work but the book didn’t fully come together for me. I felt disconnected from the story toward the end. I enjoyed the book’s many quirks and loved and deeply felt for the main character.

I read Terrace Story before this one and while I did enjoy it, I like this one a lot more. It felt more fully-realized. This was just very fun! I think that Hilary Leichter’s writing style is my preferred type of litfic-meets-magical-realism. Temporary is a book that I will probably carry with me in small bits and pieces for years to come.

this is an absurdist critique of capitalism, and though i found it witty, humorous, and heartfelt during certain moments, i also feel like the writing and plot was so pretentious at times that i feel like i'm not smart enough to fully "get it." i've never felt that way about a book really. i appreciate it for what it is though & i am glad i read it. ultimately a quirky little book that i can't quite figure out. maybe you're not supposed to.
